Project Name

Earth Day 2015-Recognizing Endangered Species Project-Blue Shiner, Cyprinella Caerulea

Project Description

The blue shiner is a threatened species on the endangered list that is endemic to Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee as part of the Coosa and Cahaba river system. The Blue Shiner is threatened as a result in decreased water quality (an increase in nitrogen and phosphorus) and an increase in siltation. The blue shiner relies on the water for survival and reproduction takes place in a cavity or crevice of submerged wood with clear, still water. Protecting the Blue Shiner will rely on protection of its habitat and nature conservancy is working with landowners and government agencies to protect the rivers. You can personally help by increasing education, decreasing pollution or donating to conservatories attempting to help.
