Earth Day 2015 - Recognizing Endangered Species Project - Northern Sea Otter, Enhydra lutris kenyoni

Project Description

The Northern Sea Otter, Enhydra lutris kenyoni, lives in southwest Alaska. Two of the top reasons why the otter is endangered include predation by killer whales (Orcinus orca) and excessive Russian and Russian/American fur trades. This majestic animal depends on the water not only for its diet of benthic invertebrates (bottom dwelling organisms) , but also the water provides a place for the otter to groom itself, rest and take care of its young. The sea otter is important to Alaskan water ecosystems, due to the fact that it feeds on benthic organisms that can destroy kelp forest, and in turn eliminate homes for organisms that rely on the kelp. One way to help protect the otter is to continue monitoring and regulating individuals who are hunting otters for their own personal gain.
