Earth Day 2015- Recognizing Endangered Species Project- The Vaquita- Phocoena sinus

Project Description

The Vaquita Porpoise, Phocoena sinus, is an endangered species that lives in the northern area of the Gulf of California (Baja). Vaquita are endemic to shallow, murky, coastal waters less than 165 ft. Vaquita are shy animals and are not usually active at the surface. Because of which, they are difficult to observe. They spend relatively long periods of time underwater to feed on croakers, grunts, crustaceans, squid and octopus. Commercial fishing is the greatest threats, along with environmental pollution, habitat degradation, and inbreeding due to low population numbers. Ensuring these porpoises will not be caught in commercial fishing nets will also ensure the porpoise will live and thrive in their natural habitat. Individuals can do their part to save the Vaquitas by teaching others about the rare porpoise. Individuals can also refrain from buying seafood caught in the gold of California where these animals are caught on the side.
