Earth Day 2015 Recognizing Endangered Species Project The Green Sea Turtle, Cheloia mydas

Project Description

The Green Sea turtle, Chelonia mydas, is an endangered species that lives in Florida and on the Pacific coast of Mexico. These turtles are threatened by the overharvesting of their eggs, hunting of adults, being caught in fishing gear and loss of nesting beach sites. Green sea turtles have ocean water habitats, and once they hatch and make it to the water it rarely returns to land. It is important for us to save Green Sea turtles because they are one of the few sea animals that eat sea grass, which needs to be constantly kept cut short in order to keep sea grass beds healthy. In order to protect these amazing creatures we should watch out for these animals when they do come ashore to lay their eggs and keep away from their nesting areas. We can also be more careful when fishing, so that we do not harm these animals when we do so.
