Earth Day 2015 - Recognizing Endangered Species Project - The Smalltooth Sawfish, Pristis pectinata

Project Description

The Smalltooth Sawfish, Pristis pectinata, is an endangered species found in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. However, it has not been found in the past 50 years in the U.S. This species is endangered because of fishermen catching them and not releasing them back into the ocean. Another reason for the decline is from habitat loss through pollution of oil and trash in the waters. This species depends on water to breath and reproduce. Culturally the sawfish is important to many tribes around the world because they are looked upon as a symbol of strength, spirituality, and admiration. We can keep this species around by releasing them back into the water after being caught. We can also keep our oceans clean by not polluting the water with oil and trash.
