Earth Day 2015 - Recognizing Endangered Species Project - Altamaha spinymussel (Elliptio spinosa)

Project Description

The Altamaha spinymussel (Elliptio spinosa), found exclusively in the Altamaha river in Georgia, was added to the endangered species list in 2011. Decline in population of the Altamaha spinymussel is a result of damage to the Altamaha River and its tributaries: pollution, over-withdrawal of water, declining host fish population, drought, and all-terrain vehicle traffic on the riverbed where water levels are low. These mussels, like most other freshwater mussels, thrive in clean, flowing water and filter-feed on algae, bacteria, and decaying matter. These mussels should be saved because, through feeding, they clean the water, but they are very susceptible to pollution thus are good indicators of healthy ecosystems. To do your part in protecting the Altamaha spinymussel, become aware of the four units of land designated as their critical habitat and avoid activities (e.g., adding litter or other pollutants) that would further damage the habitat or the waterways that feed into it.
